Circuit training workouts are pretty intense and only allow you to take short breaks between exercises. The thing is, circuit training exercises can be bad for you if done the wrong way and can lead to injury. The following article by Craig Ballantyne of Turbulence Training fame will explain why circuit training needs to change and why there is a better solution called Metabolic Resistance Training.

Craig has allowed me to publish this great article about how circuit training workouts can be seriously dangerous to your health. He called it the ‘Death of Circuit Training’ and after reading the article you will see why. Craig has been in the physical fitness industry for years and knows what he his talking about. When he says something we should listen.

By Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS

On Saturday morning at my local YMCA, I watched two guys do “vomit inducing conditioning workouts”. I call them “vomit-inducing” because I wanted to vomit from watching their form.

One guy was doing explosive reverse curls (meant to be hang cleans) while another did flippity flop DB snatches followed by one of the worst planks I’ve ever witnessed.

Injure your rotator cuffs and lower back much, boys?

And this is why we are going to see the Death of Hard-core Circuit Training Workouts in the next few years. Between the injuries and the vomiting, these home-made hard-core trainers are making a mockery of serious, professional personal trainers.

I mean, listen, I’ve watched two 15-year old boys make each other puke at the gym, but would you want THEM to be your trainer?

Of course not.

You want results. That’s all that matters. You don’t want to – or need to – vomit when you exercise. And you don’t want to be injured all the time either. Or am I just that out of touch with what the cool kids are doing these days?

I don’t know…maybe it’s just the grizzled ol’ veteran trainer in me that gets frustrated with the way things are in the fitness industry.

After all, I’ve been through…

“The Endless Amount of Cardio Phase”

“The Situps and Crunches Phase”

“The Dangerous Standing on the Stability Ball Phase”

and now…

“The Do Circuit Training Workouts Until Your Puke With No Regard to Form Phase”.

But this too shall pass.

Of course, it won’t disappear overnight, but you and I will still be here when these “hard-core” trainers shiftily disappear and fly-by-night after their clients come in with sore backs, cricks in their necks, and ruined rotators.

You see, they don’t understand that it’s not about destroying clients.

Just the opposite.

It’s about TRANSFORMING clients. About making them better people. Challenging them to change their bodies and their lives. And yes, working through physical challenges is a part of that, but not at the expense of their overall health and safety.

After all, there’s no point in being able to do a “killer workout” if it puts you on the disabled list for 6 weeks or makes you vomit up that $4 protein shake and $5 chicken breast. Sounds a little counter- productive to me.

Listen, there will always be room for tough workouts, for trainers to take their clients to their limits, but only when done safely and under the guidelines of proven scientific research and years of experience.

In fact, I spent an hour this weekend going through an article on Metabolic Finishers that Certified Turbulence Trainer Mike Whitfield submitted for a new TT program for our members. Now THAT is how you should do advanced, intense workouts.

Thank goodness for trainers like Mike, and I’ll be sharing some of these workouts with 91,500 TT readers very soon.

But those home-made hard-core trainers and their circuit death workouts “finished at all costs” are not going to last.

And that’s a good thing.

That will leave more room for our Turbulence Training 1 Million Mission of helping 1 Million Men and Women transform their bodies and their lives.

More room for you and I to make a difference and leave a legacy that remains long after we’re working out in the old trainers home down in Florida.

So I’m calling a peak in the market.

The bubble is bursting.

The stock of hard-core circuit training exercises is going down, and will be replaced – starting today – with better solutions, by trainers who care about results, not locker room boasting of how many people vomited in their class today.

It’s time to change the way the fitness industry thinks about exercise. It’s time to move away from sacrificing form and function and shift back to what matters – helping you transform and redesign your body so that you get the results you want.

Not the results that some hard-core, sadistic, home-made trainer wants.

Circuit training workouts are dead. Long live smart training.

To your safety and success,

Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS

Find out how Craig’s Metabolic Resistance Training can help you burn fat and get in shape safely.

Besides a properly structured workout program the true secret to building muscle is to adopt a proper diet for weight training. Whether you are new to bodybuilding or you have simply decided to find out more, one of the most important things you must learn is the importance of eating foods that help build muscle.

People who overeat and pack their body with fat eventually negate all the benefits of body building because the lean, ripped look becomes impossible to attain. So, if you follow a proper body building diet of low fat, high protein and decent carbs you will do just fine. However because a good body building diet will incorporate more calories than a normal diet, there are certain considerations that also must be understood as well.

While it’s correct that you will burn off a lot of calories whilst working out, there will also be a metabolic calorie burning effect that will occur as well, but please keep in mind that it is wrong to overdo it! The larger the mass of a person is, the greater the possibility they will want to eat more and more.

This is not a strange side effect it is simply a normal reaction the body will have to maintaining a significant volume of muscle mass. Bear in mind, muscle is significantly denser than fat and this means that muscle will require more calories to maintain its size.

That’s why muscular people do not pile on lots of fat when they increase their calorie intake – the muscles burn the calories by “consuming” the excess calories. Now, that is often taken by some people as a reason to eat whatever it is they want and in massive quantities.

This is a highly misleading idea of what a suitable body building diet should include. That is, you will increase your calorie intake slightly but if you increase it massively then you will start to pile on a lot of fat on top of whatever muscle that you have. The fat simply gets stored and you will eventually have to burn it back off through exercise. The outcome of doing this will make you look like someone who likes working out, but enjoys eating even more.

That is hardly the type of physique you really want is it?

So, as you can see, there’s a great deal of common sense needed to follow a good diet for building muscle. Basically, if you eat the food that helps build muscle you can get away with eating a lot provided you have solid muscle mass. However, once you slip into the bad habit of eating whatever you want and in large amounts that far exceed what you need, you will find yourself ruining your own bodybuilding efforts.

“Gain 10 pounds of muscle in just 3 days” the large advert in that bodybuilding magazine promises you.

There will be pictures of a bodybuilder with enormous muscles, grinning away at you, and some before and after pictures that will have you spellbound.

Strategically located phrases like “scientifically proven” and “the secret professionals use” will make you reach for your phone and credit card.

But just a minute!

I’m sorry, but it just isn’t feasible to gain 10 pounds of muscle in 3 days.

The only way to accomplish it may be to sew on additional muscles using some unknown surgical procedure.

No matter what the ads assure you, you shouldn’t believe them.

Every single one of these ads, magazines, and internet websites are little more than a multi-billion dollar con and the ones doing it are the supplement business.

Here’s what the supplement industry does…

Every day, you see their ads, complete with false testimonials and flimsy research showing how their health supplements are the greatest thing since sliced bread and how they can help you gain 10 pounds of muscle super fast.

In reality, it’s all a big swindle.

While there are definitely a number of good muscle building supplements available, even the best muscle building supplement can’t help you to gain 10 pounds of muscle quickly.

The truth is that nothing can take the place of challenging workouts in the gym, not even the best supplements.

Whatever the assertion is, if a supplement promises to help you gain 10 pounds of muscle or burn fat at three times the typical rate, you should make your mind up on how good the supplement is based on sound research and not sham testimonials.

If this kind of a supplement did exist, wouldn’t everyone know about it and trainers the world over vouch for it?

It is not too difficult to gain 10 pounds of muscle, but definitely not in 3 days. Your muscle workouts have to be hard and intense. You must stop wasting your time on simple isolated workouts like barbell curls and stuff like that. You have to start working out with compound exercises because this is how to build muscle.

Follow this regimen:

Go to the gym often, train all parts of your body scientifically, overload your workouts little by little, eat the right musclebuilding foods and take plenty of rest; before too long you won’t just gain 10 pounds of muscle, but considerably more.

Although not in the manner depicted in the ads, supplementation can also help you to achieve your aims.

Honestly, together with a good diet there are only a small number of supplements you might need to help you improve your muscle building results. Supplements such as creatine, protein powder, fish oils and multivitamins are just about all you really need for your muscle workouts.

While viewing these ads and testimonials, use good judgment and take them with a pinch of salt, since a good number of the testimonials are inaccurate or made up.

So-called studies claiming that you can gain 10 pounds of muscle in a short period of time cunningly leads you to believe that the tests were done on people, but it is mostly faked or altered.

Truly, though, the tests were probably done on rats or mice, and you can’t correlate the data from this trumped-up research to humans.

Try to find a reference from the research data, and cross check it online at PubMed Central.

When you do, odds are that you’ll discover that the research simply doesn’t exist, and if it does, it’s probably skewed.

You Can Gain 10 Pounds of Muscle – But Not In 3 days

There is a way to gain 10 pounds of muscle naturally – not in 3 days – but in the fastest way possible. Do you want to learn the honest truth about how it can be done?

Do amino acids help build muscle? Obviously so because amino acids are the building blocks of protein which plays a vital role to play in building muscle. Have you ever thought why some body builders manage to develop well-defined muscles? Well, there are many factors that are involved in the creation of a well-toned body and taking amino acid body building supplements is something that truly dedicated bodybuilders rely on.

Serious bodybuilders are careful about what they eat and like a protein-rich diet to help muscle grow. Eating plenty of protein helps to supply the essential amino acids that are needed for building muscle. If you need to build muscle fast then protein supplements will help enormously.

Amino acids are often called the building blocks of the human body in non-technical language, but in essence, they are the molecular building blocks that make up protein. In short, protein is the building block of all living cells.

How does protein build muscle?

Protein is one of the most essential ingredients for creating strong healthy muscles, which is why many people who are serious about their strength training will use amino acid supplements to help them with their bodybuilding. Protein also plays a vital part in the health of your hair, nails, ligaments, tendons, central nervous system and even how your muscles retain water for maximum suppleness and strength.

Protein is necessary for the growth and repair of muscles that undergo wear and tear due to strength and weight training. Body builders generally use whey protein because it is effective in building lean muscle and helping to increase your energy levels. It also assists in burning fat from your body which, in turn, gives you better muscle definition. Bodybuilders tend to use whey protein because it helps their muscles recover quicker after a strenuous workout. It is easy to add whey protein to your post-workout shake or you can also get it in capsule form.

Do You Need Amino Acid Body Building Supplements?

Many body builders have found out that, without an adequate amount of amino acids in their system, the body tends to feed on its own muscles when faced with a shortage of energy. This has led to the increasing popularity of amino acid supplementation in body building to make sure that the body has plenty of fuel to build muscle rather than feeding on it. Most people take protein drinks to build muscle and will eat any other supplements needed to build muscle fast.

Dedicated body builders usually take amino acid supplements in the form of a protein shake or pill right after hard muscle exercises. Why they take amino acids immediately after a hard workout is because it is the best time to take them, while the muscles still have optimal blood flow and is most amenable to nutrients.

Any well-informed bodybuilder knows that taking an amino acid supplement immediately after working out is so crucial for getting the maximum effect.

Some of the best supplements to build muscle

Glutamine, a form of amino acid is a supplement often used by bodybuilders. It is soluble in the water and replaces glutamine depleted as a result of workouts. Glutamine has become one of the most popular in amino acid body building because it is abundant in the muscles and is acknowledged for promoting muscle growth.

Arginine is another type of amino acid that is valuable to your amino acid body building routine.

Arginine amino acid acts by promoting the growth hormone in your body and helps to regulate the metabolism of the muscles, thereby increasing lean muscle mass. It also helps to burn fat while your connective tissue, cartilage and bone are all strengthened by an effective amino acid body building routine.

Arginine is also highly important for efficient muscle metabolism because of its role in the transport, storage, and removal of nitrogen in the body. Creatine is derived from arginine, as are phosphoarginine and guanidophosphate, which all have roles in muscle metabolism.

Are you getting enough protein to build muscle from your diet?

You can get amino acids via normal dietary intake but the reason why amino acid supplements are taken more these days is because many people have a diet deficient in amino acids. We can only produce 10 of the 20 amino acids which are as follows.

Alanine

Asparagine

Aspartic acid

Cysteine

Glutamic acid

Glutamine

Glycine

Proline

Serine

Tyrosine

Essential Amino Acids

Arginine

Histidine

Isoleucine

Leucine

Lysine

Methionine

Phenylalanine

Threonine

Tryptophan

Valine

The problem with essential amino acids is that the human body doesn’t make them – you must get them from your food every day. If you don’t get enough of just one of the essential amino acids, they will be taken from your body’s proteins in your muscles and elsewhere in your body.

If you have a shortage of these important body building blocks, you would eventually become weaker and lose muscle tone. Most fitness enthusiasts will take some supplements to build muscle fast as they might not be eating the right foods to build muscle.

You can get all the amino acids in foods but there is a chance your normal diet doesn’t include some of the essential amino acids, so supplements may be required. If you decide to include amino acid supplements as part of your bodybuilding nutrition, you will soon notice that your muscles will grow larger, creating the sculpted muscles that every bodybuilder desires. Amino acid supplements are one of the best ways to build muscle fast.

List of Amino Acids

Alanine

Arginine

Asparagine

Aspartic acid

Cysteine

Glutamic acid

Glutamine

Glycine

Histidine

Isoleucine

Leucine

Lysine

Methionine

Phenylalanine

Natural bodybuilding programs are where the body will get all the necessary nutrients through a balanced nutritional diet, without dangerous supplements. And, when we focus on the topic of amateur and professional body building, most people are conscious of the prevalence of anabolic steroids in bodybuilding and weight lifting workouts.

Of course, there are a number of performance enhancing drugs which are widely used in competitive body building. But a natural bodybuilder with any sense will shun anabolics and only use natural body building which is fundamentally a drug free method for building muscle. If you want to gain muscle mass safely, you should always opt for drug free natural bodybuilding.

Anabolics In a Nutshell

For the serious muscle gainer, in essence, anabolic steroids increase the body’s ability to grow muscles by increasing the body’s ability to release growth hormones, lowering the amount of rest one needs in order to grow muscle, and allowing the body to exercise for a great deal longer than is possible without the use of drugs.

Needless to say, the physiques that these drugs create are more massive and more defined than what could ever be achieved with a natural muscle building program. Although this type of physique is often what a number of bodybuilders aspire to, there are many negatives associated with anabolic steroids to help muscles grow.

As an illustration, undue use of steroids has been connected with a number of serious medical conditions such as heart disease, kidney failure and various other problems. For the sake of your health, pursuing a natural body building program is far better for your overall health and safety.

Natural Bodybuilding

In a natural bodybuilding program, the body will get all the necessary nutrients in their natural form through a balanced nutritional diet. If you don’t feed your muscle tissue correctly you will probably have very little muscle growth. Good nutrition keeps the body healthy and you do not get any of the dangerous side effects which can occur when using dubious performance-enhancing supplements and steroids.

For someone who only aspires to do muscle workouts and keep in shape for the sake of their health, there is no possible reason they need to use anabolic steroids. Although there are many pros and cons as regards the risks related to taking drugs to enhance a weightlifting workout, for anyone who is just attempting to get in shape or look good the risks associated with drug taking are not worth the risk. There is an old saying you may have heard from other health experts; “It’s better to feel good than to look good.”

This refers to the many problems that are linked with the health issues that can arise from using anabolic steroids for building muscle fast. If you are just want to look good and lose weight, then it’s advisable to stick with natural bodybuilding because, done correctly, there are no real risks associated with it. In fact, natural body building can greatly increase your health and overall quality of life.

Natural Bodybuilding Supplements

There are lots of expensive muscle building supplements available but many are just over-hyped, a waste of money and even dangerous. If you really want to stay healthy then you should only stick to natural bodybuilding and safe weight lifting supplements. Avoid dangerous bodybuilding drugs for quick muscle gain as they will most likely will harm your body permanently. Seriously, why would you want to do anything that is not organically good for you?

Research has shown that our activity levels have a tremendous impact on our hormones and metabolism, which why strength training is perfect.

Strength Training For Women

Strength training is used more to create well-being and improve general conditioning rather than build huge muscles. Many people want good muscle tone, but do not want massive muscles like a body builder which is fine. Someone who is interested in losing body fat will strength train differently than someone looking to build bigger muscles. This is why strength training for women is ideal as most women don’t want to have bulging muscles. They prefer to look toned and athletic.

Strength Training For Weight Loss

Strength training is also great if you’re looking to lose weight. Many overweight people have gotten great results from a combination of diet and strength training. Strength training plus diet together will make you fitter and stronger and makes for a much more active lifestyle.

So, apart from the benefits to their health and fitness, what most women will like about strength training is it helps weight loss and it conditions and tones the body after losing weight.

The fact is that, pound for pound, muscle takes up a lot less space than fat. Also, toned-up muscles make you look a lot more slimmer than out-of-condition muscles. The combined effect of fat loss, muscle toning and muscle gain you get from strength training exercises can be fantastic, and it can happen quite quickly.

When you utilize the power of strength training in combination with diet you could easily lose inches on your waistline in just a few short weeks. And, as your muscles get stronger you’ll probably notice a difference in how you look as well, with less body fat and firm, shapely muscles.

Click here to download a free fatburning workout

Strength Training For Strong Bones

Strength training also brings additional benefits such as helping to increase one’s bone mineral density. The stress on your body when you exercise triggers a response from the body to promote bone growth and this stronger, thicker bone will be far more resistant to fracture. This is another reason why strength training exercises for women are such a good idea. With osteoporosis a serious health threat to women, it makes sense to do something to prevent it by making your bones as strong and healthy as possible.

Kettlebell Workouts For Women

Kettle bells are perfect for anyone who wants to seriously train, but not invest a lot of money and space on equipment. The iron weights can replace traditional exercise equipment such as dumbbells and medicine balls. Using them in your strength training workouts will improve overall body fitness which will be exactly what anyone interested in good health is looking for.

For strength and conditioning a kettlebell strength training workout is excellent because it can be used in so many ways for all parts of the body. There is no doubt that kettlebell workouts for women are great for general fitness and weight loss.

Start Strength Training Off Slowly To Avoid Injury

Like many things in life, when doing any kind any kind of strength training, its important to start off slow. Lifting excessive weights before you are ready for them can cause injury, so take it steady until your strong enough to handle them. As your fitness and strength improves you can move onto more demanding strength training workouts.

After doing strength training workouts for a while you will soon discover that you have a lot more energy and endurance than you ever thought possible, not to mention looking fit and healthy.

The sooner you start strength training workouts, the sooner your general health will improve. Most of us wait until we get seriously out of shape before beginning a strength and conditioning training program, when it is makes more sense to prevent getting that way in the first place. Strength training is suitable for both men and women, although it will probably differ slightly in some respects for obvious reasons.

Strength training is one of the most rigorous training workouts that you can experience. proper training progression is based on improving strength and conditioning. The exercises that you do during a body building workout benefits you in a number of ways. Doing body building exercises for only a few days every week will increase your stamina, boost your metabolism, and provided you eat a nutritious diet will develop lean, strong muscles. You can even do bodyweight strength training routines such as pushups , lunges and calf raises at home.

The metabolic changes caused by vigorous workouts will occur naturally as a direct result of exercise. To develop the different muscle groups you will need to use lots of different exercises specific to that part of the body. The exercises you do and the equipment you use depends on the muscles you want to develop.

Some compound exercises will workout a number of muscles simultaneously, whilst other exercises are designed to focus on a single muscle group. Having a mix of exercises is best instead of focusing on just one part of the body, which means you will have to use different equipment for each.

Free Weights

Every body-builder wants to have a broad chest and big strong arms, with powerful, bulging biceps. Free weights are one of the best options because you can easily increase the intensity of your training simply by increasing the amount you lift. Traditional barbells are ideal when you have a weight bench and you want a strenuous workout to develop large muscles.

In essence, you do a number of repetitions, gradually increasing the weight as you go through your muscle workout routine. There are so many ways to do this but it must be done in a structured way to get good results. If you are not sure how to structure your workouts , you can get some great muscle building programs to help you get started.

A typical beginning routine for those beginning strength training:

Warm-up for 5-10 minutes

Start with isolated strength training exercises such as bicep curls or chest flies.

After completing 3 sets of 12 reps for each major muscle group, move onto cardio.

Cardio can be anything that gets your heart pumping to approximately 60-70% of your maximum heart rate.

Depending on your current health, the weight you lift and the amount of cardio you should do will vary.

If you can’t get to a gym, it’s a good idea to buy your own set of dumbbells for strength training, which can easily be stored at home and can be used at any time. It’s surprising how many types of workouts you can do with just a low-cost set of dumbbells. To really make progress though, you need bigger weights and more equipment, which probably means joining a gym, unless you have the room for, and can afford, your own exercise equipment.

Other Strength Training Equipment

As well as free weights, you can also use dip stands, pull-up bars, or push-up stands to give your arm muscles a good workout. This equipment is versatile and allows you to do a full upper body workout. To build up your muscles, you only need to use this equipment a few times each week. If you only want to tone your muscles you just need to perform a smaller number of reps a few times a week.

Building up your leg muscles is easy with body building equipment. Although there’s nothing to prevent you using free weights to strengthen your leg muscles, exercise machines for performing leg curls or leg raises can be very effective. These are usually large machines for performing these exercises with your leg muscles.

If you want to develop multiple muscle groups, a home gym might be a better purchase than individual equipment. Most home gyms contain different sections for exercising a specific muscle group.

No matter what equipment you choose – free weights or a home multigym, you must do your strength training routines in the right way so that you don’t over train your muscles in the effort to get quick results. Your muscles need time to recover in between workouts so that they can rebuild the torn muscle fibres and develop further.

The Right Attitude Is Important

One final thing you have to understand is that strength training and body building requires a dedicated mindset as well as strict discipline towards achieving your goal. Not all people possess that kind of thinking and quit before they have achieved any serious muscle gain. The results you get will be based on your ability to train with heavier loads in greater fatigued states. It’s a cheesy thing to say but, no pain no gain, still applies when you want to build a muscular physique. If you don’t make the effort then your body and health won’t change for the better.

There are a number of reasons why exercise is good for you and there’s no doubt that keeping oneself active is important to keep yourself healthy and strong. Doing this is not only for people with weight problems but also for anyone who likes to stay healthy.

There is plenty that someone can do to keep active such jogging or walking every morning, play basketball or any other kind of sport. However, if your serious about getting fit, want to have muscles and look lean, then you can sign up at a gym and do proper workouts there.

People take up an exercise routine for three main reasons;

The first is when someone is overweight and the only way to lose those extra pounds is to reduce ones calorie intake and at the same time do some exercise.

The second is when someone is underweight and the only way to add extra pounds is to have more calories in ones diet.

The third is just for enjoyment and to look fitter and healthier.

To be successful any exercise routine should incorporate cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps to burn up calories and increases the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and help you to gain or lose weight.

If you are not too sure about your present state of fitness, you should first consult the doctor before undergoing any form of exercise.

These are some of the main benefits of exercising.

1. It is the best way to maintain and improve ones health and fight of a variety of diseases.

2. Research has shown that regular exercise makes you feels happier and increases your self-esteem. Improving your self-esteem is important to stop you from falling into depression or anxiety.

3. An active lifestyle should help you to live longer.

For someone who has not done a lot of exercise before you should begin gradually. Endurance and stamina can’t be built in a day but doing regular exercise will benefit your health enormously.

One important thing you must do as well as exercise is to have a nutritious diet.

Consult with a dietitian or a health professional to plan a good diet program. A suitable diet plan starts by evaluating the lifestyle and the health of the patient. Afterwards, this is thoroughly discussed and recommended to the person, which usually consists of an eating plan and an exercise program that does not require the use of supplements or having to buy any expensive fitness equipment. You can exercise without any equipment, although some can be useful.

A good diet should contain something from all the food groups.

Any healthy diet should have plenty of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Some of this can be from oats, rice, potatoes and cereals. The best diets incorporate plenty of vegetables and fruits since these have phytochemicals, enzymes and micronutrients that are essential for a healthy diet.

Fat is also important, but this should come from mono and poly saturated food sources rather than animal fats. As fat contains more than double the number of calories in food, this should be taken in small quantities if you want to lose weight.

There are a couple of things you should avoid to keep healthy. Smoking and drinking alcoholic drinks are not good for your health. Smoking has been shown to cause lung cancer and other diseases as well as complications for women giving birth. Drinking to excess can cause all kinds of health problems especially to your liver.

Non-smokers should try to stay away from people who do smoke because research has shown that non-smokers are at increased risk of developing cancer caused by secondary smoke inhalation.

Nutrition plays a most vital part in helping one to lose weight, gain muscle and get rid of excess fat and bodybuilders use a variety of supplements in their diet to help muscle grow. Those which give artificial muscle growth are never used in natural bodybuilding.

Instead of using these supplements as artificial aids to muscle growth a combination of intense weight training and a complete nutritional balanced diet is the best way to gain weight and muscle. This doesn’t mean that supplements shouldn’t be taken at all though.
Plenty of supplements are available for building muscle but very few are really effective. Creatine is considered the most useful of all and is taken by many bodybuilders to enhance performance.

Creatine is probably the most extensively researched performance-enhancing supplement ever, with a quite amazing safety record, although there are some people will disagree despite the evidence.

Creatine has been studied constantly and any long-term side effects have yet to be found, although after nearly twenty years of regular use one might assume they are either insignificant or absent.

Here are a few different forms of Creatine:

Creatine monohydrate

Creatine citrate

Creatine phosphate

Creatine-magnesium chelate

Creatine ethyl ester

Out of all the different types available, the tried and tested Creatine monohydrate is probably the best one to take for building muscle mass and performance. There have been many studies as to the effect of taking Creatine monohydrate for increasing strength and muscle mass and there is solid proof that it does just that.

In essence, Creatine helps to build muscle mass as it gives you more cellular energy to train harder.

Because Creatine increases the amount of cellular energy available you can train harder than normal and, as a consequence, develop more muscle mass. It may also help protein synthesis for building muscle.

However, despite its energy boosting properties, research has shown that Creatine doesn’t seem to be very effective for endurance sports such as long distance running and rowing. It is much more effective for sports such as weightlifting and sprinting that require short bursts of energy.

Health benefits of taking Creatine for older people

Where Creatine is a great health benefit is in preventing the steady loss of muscle mass among older people. The scientific term for this is sarcopenia. This is more likely to happen in less active individuals but even occurs in those who are more physically active so lack of activity is not the only cause of lean muscle loss.

The fact is, as people get older, even if they are still physically active, their individual cells die and are not replaced as quickly as in younger people. However, this is where Creatine can help to lessen the problem of age-related muscle loss by boosting cellular regeneration.

By increasing the rate of cell replacement in older adults you could even say that Creatine helps to keep you looking younger for longer.

Now that is one health benefit worth having when the time comes.
